Linus [Torvalds] versus GNOME

Linux's founder, dislikes the GNOME desktop. In 2005, for example, Torvalds posted on the GNOME-usability list that "I personally just encourage people to switch to KDE."

Torvalds feels this way, in part, due to his perception that "This 'users are idiots, and are confused by functionality' mentality of Gnome is a disease. If you think your users are idiots, only idiots will use it. I don't use Gnome, because in striving to be simple, it has long since reached the point where it simply doesn't do what I need it to do."

Gorilla wreaks havoc in zoo escape

* 180 kilogram (400 pound) gorilla escapes enclosure, causes chaos in Dutch zoo

* Four people hurt; one woman bitten, grabbed as ape runs amok in restaurant

* Gorilla finally barricaded in restaurant, shot with a sedative dart and recaptured

* Unclear how ape scaled high walls and crossed moat -- gorillas can't swim

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) -- A 400-pound gorilla escaped from his enclosure and ran amok in a Rotterdam zoo Friday, biting one woman, dragging her around, and causing panic among dozens of visitors before he was finally subdued, officials and a witness said.

"He got over the moat, which in itself is remarkable, because gorillas can't swim," Dorrestijn said. "He got onto a path for visitors and started running and went at full speed through tables and diners at the Oranje restaurant."

"I saw the beast running through the park with a woman behind him, him grabbing her forearm," De Jonge said.

At a distance of around 30 yards, he saw the gorilla lie down near the woman and then heard her scream.

"He bit her, or I think he bit her, because when he stood up his mouth was covered in blood," De Jonge said.

Israeli motorists drove around dead body on road

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - More than two dozen Israeli motorists manoeuvred around the dead body of a road accident victim lying in the middle of a busy intersection, failing to stop to help in an incident captured by a traffic camera.

In footage broadcast by Israeli television stations on Monday and in a series of photographs on newspaper front pages, motorcyclist Moshe Yisraeli was seen trying to squeeze between two trucks at a junction on a highway near Tel Aviv on Sunday.

He never made it. The camera captured his body lying near the centre of the four-way intersection, his motorcycle metres away on its side.

Linux Geeks: copy a floppy with dd and gzip

From floppy to file on filesystem:

dd if=/dev/fd0 | gzip --to-stdout -9 > image.file.gz

dd reads from floppy drive fd0 and writes to standard output.

gzip compresses stdin to stdout. -9 telss gzip to compress better.

And the compressed image file is created.

from file on filesystem to floppy:

cat image.file.gz | gzip -d --to-stdout | dd of=/dev/fd0

cat reads the compressed image file and pipes it to gzip.

-d tells gzip to decompress. gzip's stdout is piped to dd.

dd writes to floppy fd0

If you have two floppy drives, and most people don't, you can just run:

dd if=/dev/fd0 of=/dev/fd1

You can have more fun if you know how to use netcat. netcat lets you send data over your network. You get the drill.

I haven't tried to copy/clone a hard drive this way yet.

Anyone want to try this on a working hard drive? Let me know how it works out.

How about this:

Do the above with a USB hard drive plugged in to your computer. Then take the USB drive to an identical computer and decompress the image there.

The Linux kernel recognises the USB drive as /dev/sda. So on a single partition USB drive, you would use /dev/sda1.
